RELIABILITY AND COST SAVINGS

The original Loctite invention, developed more than 50 years ago, was a unique liquid resin that hardened in absence of air and in presence of metal. This pioneering technology led to redesign of whole families of machinery and changed the fastening methods in several industries by solving problems customers had long accepted as "unsolvable".

Documented case studies from over five decades show that Loctite® adhesives and sealants deliver significant cost savings and improved equipment reliability compared with conventional mechanical methods of assembly. In addition to newly launched www.iLoctite.com, Henkel offers several other services to identify and achieve cost savings and equipment reliability for its customers.

END-USER TRAINING

Henkel offers dedicated training programs for the manufacturing and maintenance professionals. Loctite® Maintenance Reliability Workshops – Conducted by Henkel MRO Application Specialists, Loctite® Maintenance Workshops are a hands-on training program for a company’s maintenance engineers. The Workshops include information and training on the identification of common causes of failure of mechanical assemblies and usage of anaerobic engineering adhesives to maximize equipment reliability.

Loctite® Technology Workshops for OEMs – Customized to the needs of your manufacturing process, these on-site workshops for design, production and quality engineers provide hands-on training on selecting and using different adhesives for improving process efficiency, reduce costs and improve assembly performance.

Cost Reduction Plant Surveys – A customized Loctite® Plant Survey involves a complete tour of all production lines, as well as any subassembly areas, by a trained Adhesive and Sealants specialist to document all existing and potential cost reduction opportunities.

DESIGN PARTNERSHIPS

Whether customers are designing a new assembly or innovating an existing design, Henkel’s design partnership program is aimed at reducing costs and improving targeted identified performance factors through identifying design, material or process changes with adhesives.

LOCTITE® HISTORY

The story of Loctite® Corporation begins at Dr. Vernon Krieble's chemistry laboratory at Trinity College in Connecticut, USA in 1953. This entrepreneurial chemistry professor discovered that the original anaerobic liquid, when applied to nuts, bolts, and fasteners, would flow into the crevices and harden and lock them together – the first Threadlocker was born and was branded Loctite.

He further enhanced the commercial viability of anaerobic adhesives by employing a unique bottle that provided a continuous exchange of air to prevent the anaerobic liquid from curing within the package. This achievement ushered in a new era of mechanical reliability where chemical adhesives could be used in place of traditional locking devices to eliminate the vibrational loosening of mechanical fasteners – the number one cause of machine failure. Loctite® made its official public debut at a press conference at the University Club in New York on July 26, 1956. The promise of solving the age-old problem of loose nuts and bolts in machines and appliances – a problem that customers had long ago accepted as unsolvable – led to an incredible flow of inquiries.

By 1957, Loctite® sales topped the $100,000 (US$) mark, and just four years later they eclipsed $1 million. Based on the early threadlocking applications and wider acceptance by end-users, customer requests led to product changes with strengths and viscosities to suit different applications such as: the sealing of pipe thread fittings to replace pipe dopes; sealing of flanges to replace cut gaskets and the use of retaining compounds to replace force fits with easy slip fits which do not stress parts.

In 1963, the company officially changed its name from American Sealants to Loctite Corporation. At that point there was no looking back as just a year later Loctite introduced cyanoacrylate adhesives, also known as instant adhesives, to further expand their line of industrial adhesives. This was the first of many new product introductions outside of the anaerobic chemistries that the company had been founded upon. Loctite has since been at the forefront of developments in engineering adhesives and is credited with introducing several innovative products such as, surface insensitive instant adhesives, light cure adhesives and silicones, Threadlockers in semi-solid stick form and pre-activated epoxies.

In 1997, Loctite Corporation was acquired by Henkel, a multinational Fortune 500 company, and has become a flagship brand for Henkel Adhesive Technologies.

LOCTITE® IN THE ASIA PACIFIC REGION

As early as 1960’s, Loctite had started marketing its innovative products in the Asia-Pacific Region. In 1972, the then Loctite Corporation established a subsidiary in Hong Kong to cover the Far Eastern and Pacific markets, and soon established operations in Australia and Japan. Loctite made its first major launch in China through participation in the Canton industrial fair in April, 1975. In December, 1978, a Loctite engineering team led by Ted Patlovitch conducted a seminar for the Ministry of Agriculture, which had become overwhelmed by breakdowns in farm machinery. So well received was the presentation that the Loctite team was called back in the following years to train more Chinese engineers.

In 1987, Henkel established a state-of-the-art Loctite® manufacturing facility strategically situated in Yantai, China to help meet demand in the Asia Pacific region. From this ideal location on the Yellow Sea – geographically equidistant from Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul, Korea – Henkel was able to take advantage of a well developed transportation infrastructure to facilitate the timely delivery of Loctite® products. Ever since then, global manufacturers with plants in Asia and the Pacific have been able to receive the same high quality Loctite® products with just-in-time delivery.

Today, Henkel Asia Pacific has its research and development facilities located at Shanghai, China and services its customers in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, India, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam through its trained application and sales engineers, wide distribution network, and application centers located across the region.

More than five decades after introducing the original threadlocker, the Loctite® brand of engineering adhesives and sealants continues to lead the Asia Pacific market in terms of innovative products, superior performance, high value, and dedicated customer service and support – whether on the production line, or online.
