Preventing Leaks with Anaerobic Thread Sealants
12-22-2009
Leaks are serious business. The costs from leaks go far beyond the value of the estimated one billion liters of fluids and gasses lost. This article explores the theory and recent practice of preventing leaks for pipe thread fittings. Anaerobic thread sealants can prevent leaks by serving as a protective umbrella over the many potential causes of leakage. These metal adhesives offer significant benefits over other sealing methods. Anaerobic Thread Sealants Work to Eliminate Leakages
12-22-2009
Leaks are serious business. Most leaks are located at pipe joints. Threaded joints in piping systems are unavoidable. Anaerobic thread sealants offer a number of benefits over conventional sealing methods.
Buford Brothers’ Compressor Department specializes in the sales and service of Quincy Air Compressors in Tennessee. Air compressors develop high pressures and temperatures and when coupled with vibration, air leaks and fastener loosening can occur anywhere throughout the system. Buford decided to use Loctite anaerobic thread sealant on all the threaded pipefittings in the system proactively and avoided losses of up to US$12,500 hp per leak. The University of Wisconsin in Madison has a central heating and cooling system in over 300 buildings. A supervisor had recently attended a Loctite Manufacturing Reliability Training where he learned about anaerobic adhesives, thread sealants and primers. “Now wherever we absolutely, positively don’t want any leaks, we use a thread sealant from Loctite.” Read more...

Reliable and Cost-Effective Locking and Sealing of Fasteners
09-03-2009
Anaerobic threadlockers perform where mechanical devices fail. Just as slicks on a racecar grip the track, threadlockers help fastener threads grip. Based on anaerobic technology, these metal adhesives do what the mechanical aids cannot: they completely fill up the microscopic gap between the interfacing threads. Bolts secured with threadlocker retain clamping force better than mechanical devices. A special nut or washer can cost up to five times as much as a liquid threadlocker and liquid threadlockers reduce the cost of inventory. There are several key factors to consider when choosing a threadlocking compound: shear strength, cure speed, gap-filling and operating environment. Read more...

Proactive Maintenance Reduces Downtime and Costs
07-31-2009
In the manufacturing industry over a quarter of the total cost of finished goods can be attributed to maintenance costs. The majority of unplanned downtime is caused by mechanical assembly failure. The key to preventing these failures and reducing the maintenance cost is to implement proactive maintenance processes instead of relying on traditional reactive processes. Companies have achieved tangible savings by implementing such a process they learned during the Loctite® Maintenance Reliability Workshop, to prevent mechanical failures, air leaks and oil leaks.
